A 20 minute interruption and introduction to ring-craft; judging potential agility, temperament and obedience of a class of young pups.

Instructed by ladies in fuzzy green jogging suits with matching pink shoes and flowers in their hair; eight volunteers from the audience are invited to come and stand on a grass green runway. Put into pairs they are told they are about to compete in a ‘dog show’. Each pair is given a team colour and a special bag containing a t-shirt, special doggy head gear a collar and lead. The remaining audience are given voting cards by two special guest judges and asked to vote for the dog they believe to be the best performer in each of 3 classes. The judges interrupt and pass comment on the dogs performance for the duration of the event.

This event was first presented in September 2007 at BIFLTBA (Birmingham International Festival of Live and Time Based Art) at ‘The Edge’ in Birmingham and was then performed as part of ‘emergency’ at Greenroom 2007.

“After an action packed demonstration by the enthusuastic pups, voting cards were collected and counted and prizes were awarded to the impressively obedient animals. The dog in first place just made it with his pants still on - Judge Grimwood noted that wearing designer underwear would not fetch him extra points; but Banjo with his barked rendition of ‘happy birthday’ was not overlooked. On conclussion the show was packed back into the wheelie bone box from which it arrived and the event was over.”

Adela Jones

Adela Jones is a Salford based artist whose work is very much about people. How people relate to one another and how they relate to space and objects around them.

Adela’s work with the public is a continuous source of inspiration and her strong interest in this filters through into her performance practice. At her live art events the audience are nearly always given an active role to play. Different methods have been used to invite and control their interaction; from following instructions and completing tasks; to voting or sitting in a particular place.

In 2002 she was awarded a research and development grant and residency at Grizedale Arts, Cumbria where she performed ‘The Stock Judging Event’ in a barn. This involved a team of 16 local people working inside and alongside a heard of hand stitched pantomime cows. She has performed in galleries and alternative spaces across the Northwest; up a Welsh mountain, in a mechanics pit, in a rural garden, in a very tiny space in a shop window and more recently in Birmingham.

In May 2006 she establised Live Art WOC; an evolving programme of live art and performance based at Cow Lane Studios in Salford.

Future projects include a comission by Bluecoat Arts Centre in early summer 2008 to create a site-specific live art event exploring people’s relationship with plants.

Adela works as a freelance artist on a broad range of participatory arts projects; in collaboration with galleries, museums, schools, health and community organisations.
