Levantes Dance Theatre

The company work primarily with Dance Theatre, with a constant enthusiasm and focus for an overall aesthetic and visual indulgence.

Levantes Dance Theatre is a young company doing extraordinary things. Eleni Edipidi and Bethanie Harrison are recent graduates - not just from formal education  but from a number of emergent artist development schemes in the North West of England and in a short space of time this Anglo-Greek duo of young women have caught the eye of a number of venues, commissioners and artists alike.

To date their work has only been glimpsed at platforms and showcases ranging from greenroom/hÅb’s Emergency in Manchester to Depot Untapped in London. Thier most concerted outing so far has been as part of the  LANWest (Live Art North West) 2008 regional showcase tour with Gin&Satsumas.

They have, however, been selected for small development commissions by Rules & Regulations/the Nuffield Theatre Lancaster; and an outreach scheme by Dance4; and Eleni Edipidi is the recipient of the 2009 Marion North mentoring scheme.

Levantes Dance Theatre was the winner of the Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award 2009, and presented Room Temperature Romance to sell-out audiences at the Pit Theatre,  Barbican, London in October 2009 as part of barbicanbite09.

Comments on Gin & Satsumas:

Without a doubt one of the most intelligent, entertaining and generous works I’ve ever seen. I can only hope that Levantes Dance Theatre’s strong artistic handwriting will continue enriching and challenging the British arts scene. We need more artists like this.”
Silke Arnold
Creative Projects Manager
East London Dance

“They bring the stage space alive with their strong presence, and striking use of visual environments. This is certainly a company worth looking out for!”
Sally O’Donnell
Senior Lecturer of Dance
Leicester University, De Monford

“Members of Levantes Dance Theatre trace ambiguous themes of compulsive disorders, pleasures and sins through an intensely visual display. Inventive props and wacky costumes feature high on the agenda…”
Josephine Leask @ Resolution! 2008

“Gin & Satsumas is a surreal cocktail of sensation. Visually stunning, this carnival cascade of cross-dressing strange-faced people doing strange-placed things is curious yet oddly pleasing.”
Mandy Richards @ Resolution! 2008

“Often challenging, their previous works have established Levantes Dance Theatre as one of the most innovative modern dance organisations in the country. A powerful critique of glorified normality, Gin & Satsumas is every bit as refreshing as the title suggests”
Aaron Lavery
Manchester Metro 2008
