Turn Showcase 1: The GEF House Experiment - “Three Crows on the Road” *Turn Prize Winners*

  • Number in company: 3
  • Type of work/venue/location: Small, promenade, black box, dance

Originally performing at Turn under the name Voidance, The GEF House Experiment is made up of Julia Griffin, Kate Engineer and Bridget Fiske. Griffin, Engineer and Fiske (GEF) came together in January 2009, to explore and experiment with the boundaries between dance and other art forms.  Each has worked at a professional level with national and international profiles. They now share a common ground geographically, all being based in Greater Manchester. Bridget Fiske has recently arrived from Australia where she worked professionally for eight years on a huge range of projects nationally and internationally. Julia Griffin, originally from Nottingham, has been based in Manchester for the past 19 years with performance and choreographic credits nationally, internationally and on film and tv.  Kate Engineer has worked across the UK and in Europe specialising in work with disabled and non-disabled dancers, storytelling and theatrical installation.

Three Crows on the Road  is an immersive experience – part performance, part video-installation – turning greenroom’s performance space into a swirling mass of translucent colour and  imagery, populated by the three ‘crows’ – carving their way through the standing audience, tangling and disentangling red thread behind them and creating an extraordinary series of images and tableaux.  The haunting final image of a woman suspended dummy-like left the audience pensive and moved.

Visually evocative with gothic overtones, it explores the interaction between the live body and projected image, investigating how character and narrative can be developed from legendary and contemporary female archetypes.

The GEF House Experiment will use the commission to further develop the piece into a full-length work available for touring in Spring 2010.
It will receive its premier at greenroom on 27 November 2009.  For ticket details contact 0161 615 0500, www.greenroomarts.org.
